John Foxwell

Areas of Focus

John is a Licensed Professional Counselor and art therapist working toward American Art Therapy Association certification and the Licensed Art Therapist credential in Oregon.

John came to the therapy profession through his intersecting passions for art, psychology, and helping others. As a therapist, John brings these passions into the working relationship with his clients, holding space for them to “step outside” themselves and create new, more productive and self actualized ways of being. John is driven by compassionate person-centered principles and believes that it is the quality of the working relationship itself- a relationship based in empathy, authenticity, and mutual respect- that provides the key to positive change.

John attended the Masters in Art Therapy Counseling program at Marylhurst University in Marylhurst, Oregon and comes from a background in community mental health. For over five years, John worked with a diverse range of folks living with severe persistent mental health symptoms. Through this experience, he has developed a well-rounded, person-centered approach, integrating a variety of techniques and modalities, to help each individual client access their own internal wisdom and follow their subjective path to healing.

He is skilled in integrating such modalities as CBT, DBT, narrative therapy, art therapy, and mindfulness. His experience is that the underlying truth common to many people who seek counseling is that life can be traumatic, and he takes a trauma-informed and strengths-based approach to help people separate from the painful and self-sabotaging aspects of their narrative and transform them into something more joyful, connected and empowering.

John is LGBTQ+ affirming and passionate about working with people of marginalized backgrounds within an intersectional framework. John specializes in treating issues related to trauma, depression/mood disorders, and anxiety. In his personal life, John enjoys pursuing his artwork and engaging in the rich culture and community of Portland, where he lives with his partner of 10+ years and his cat.
