About Derrick

Derrick is a fifth year doctoral candidate in the Counseling Psychology program at the University of Oregon. Originally from Bellflower, California, he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University, Fullerton, where he majored in Sociology. While attending UO, Derrick has worked as a graduate employee for the Division of Equity and Inclusion and the Service Learning Program. His current research focuses on mentorship in relation to the academic and vocational experiences of Black/African American and Latinx college students.

As a therapist, Derrick has completed placements in community settings and university counseling centers. He believes in working collaboratively with clients to identify goals, personal strengths, and factors that will be helpful in managing challenges. His work is rooted in multicultural and ecological theories that take into account the contexts in which client’s live. He prioritizes client safety and care, and believes in establishing a trusting therapeutic relationship.

Outside of therapy, Derrick enjoys reading, listening to music, watching movies, laughing and making others laugh, spending time with family and friends, and wearing patterned socks.
